About

A new display focusing on the Arran artwork of Scottish artist and Glasgow School of Art graduate Margot Sandeman is now open in the Fragile Art gallery in Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery.

The Isle of Arran represented an escape from the stresses and strains of city life for Sandeman, a tranquil place where she could paint, relax and recharge. She fell in love with the island as a child on family holidays and then as a student would go on painting trips there with her artist friend Joan Eardley. She ended up buying a cottage there in the 1970s with her husband, ceramicist James Robson.

Sandeman’s profound connection with the island is evident in her poetic artworks, which often focus on sheep. She had a bit of an obsession with these animals! Come and experience the joy of Arran’s lush landscape, its sleepy inhabitants and atmospheric light in this trip ‘doon the watter’.

See this new display in the Fragile Art Gallery until June 2024.
