The Studio Fotokino in Marseille presents a monographic show of the Irish artist Nigel Peake, from June 11th to July 31th, 2016.
About
Born in 1981 in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, Nigel Peake begins by studying architecture and after obtaining his degree, he decides to work as an illustrator. His two favourite subjects are, paradoxically, nature and the city. In his drawings, the cities are full of geometry and colour, where circulation seems impossible and limited to the gaze of the onlooker. He observes the natural world from either very close or very far, revealing its shape and structure, almost with a geological approach. The elements’ materiality becomes an inspiration in itself, a pretext for exercises in style which result in different series of abstractions.
Nigel Peake uses geometry, patterns and colours as tools to describe the world as he sees it through his window in the Irish countryside, or in today’s megalopolises.
Nigel Peake has worked on many commercial projects for Hermès, Tate Modern, NY Times, Phaidon or Ninja Tune, and continues to develop his own universe, creating illustrations and artist books (35 books in 10 years, such as Sheds, Maps, and Into the Wild, etc.). If It Is, his exhibition at the Fotokino Studio will feature ten sets of drawings created in Ballytrustan (Northern Ireland), Bois Buchet, Lausanne and Paris, between 2013 and 2016.
