On the opening evening, Prof. Dr. Stephan Berg, Director of the Kunstmuseum Bonn, will host a dialogue with the artist to talk about ‘The image as a transitional experience’ in front of her originals.

The artist‘s new large-format works impress with their expansive use of colour and transport the viewer into a multifaceted cosmos of painting. In it, Nicola Staeglich transforms colour and traces of paint into complex pictorial spaces that release light and make time visible.

Since 2003, the artist has been staging her oil paintings using the technique of reverse glass painting on transparent acrylic glass bodies. The depth of the support creates a pictorial space between the colour applied behind the acrylic glass and the white of the wall, which simultaneously becomes an extended projection surface for the painting. In this way, the boundaries between image, body and space, light and shadow become fluid.

Staeglich succeeds in making the colour float and placing it in an intermediate state of material presence and atmospheric radiance. In this way, her paintings act as a storehouse of energy and time. The viewer encounters a broad spectrum ranging from warm red and orange tones to the monochromatic tone of restrained grey and pastel shades to high-contrast settings of dark green and brown next to light salmon pink and beige.

In dialogue with Staeglich‘s pictorial bodies of colour, a moment of calm immediately sets in. You want to absorb the specific luminosity of the colour and follow the movements of the brushstrokes.

A constitutive element in Staeglich‘s paintings is her staging of painting as a readable performative action. Using handmade brushes, the artist creates sometimes broad and narrow, sometimes short and elongated colour settings in a space-time continuum that swells and recedes. Unmediated splashes of colour or resistant moments of bristling brush hairs interrupt the calm flow in places.

With her exhibition title TIME SIGNATURE, the artist focuses on the rhythmised ‘beat’ of her brushstrokes in unity with the individual authorship of her body-emphasised performance of painting. Her luminous, floating colour spaces enable the viewer to ‘deepen their vision into the imaginary (…). Thus the order of painting, the synthesis of juxtaposition and simultaneity, is not the effect of an optical illusion, but a cultural invention.“ (L.S., Thinking in Colour, Berlin 2020)
