A story of coal mining, hardship and toil and its legacy in our lives and landscapes.
About
Contemporary textile and mixed media artist Nicky Ilsley uses her creativity to tell powerful and compelling stories from the past. Fascinated by social history, loss of knowledge, skills and communities there are few industries and occupations that challenge in the way coal mining does. This unique exhibition of 2D and 3D art explores the reality of working deep into the earth beneath us with its inherent dangers and lasting legacy. She includes all those working underground (men, ponies and birds) together with landowners and the environmental issues from burning fossil fuels.
Weston Park’s historic connection to coal mining makes it the perfect venue. In keeping with today’s emphasis on sustainability Nicky creates using pre-worn and vintage fabric, found objects and ephemera. Indeed this body of work was inspired by a handful of miners ‘tallies’ purchased at a vintage fair in Staffordshire and their symbolism is often repeated throughout the collection. Her processes include burning, burying, distressing, eco and rust dye, earth pigments, mark making, hand and machine stitching to create interesting varied surfaces and textures. Visitors will enjoy the range of art on display which have both visual impact and meaningful strong narratives. Nicky is very excited to bring it to you and we are absolutely delighted to present and share her work with you.
