About

This is a Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries SPACE Offsite event in collaboration with Wellcome Collection. Nick Franglen will talk about the science and aesthetics behind his installation Hive, and how he came to his current fascination with combining spaces and sounds. He will be in conversation with Dr Marius Kwint, Senior Lecturer in Visual Culture at the University of Portsmouth and guest curator of the acclaimed Wellcome Collection exhibition Brains: the Mind as Matter. They will be joined by a leading expert in the neuroscience of hearing, sensation and perception in a Literary Salon at Latitude Festival, see details below. Hive is perhaps the ultimate in immersive surround-sound experiences. More than 50 radio sets, each tuned to a different station, will be left to run continuously throughout the festival in an enclosed dome-shaped space. Hive will be at once a remarkable sound-wall of unrepeatable, complex harmonies and structures, reflecting the daily fluctuations of the combined mass of UK's radio output as heard in one location — and a powerful comment on the choices we make in filtering that information. Hive is a profound experience — local radio DJs jostle for attention with world leaders to a background swirl of pop music, modern jazz and baroque ensembles that draws the ear and creates surprising new connections. At the top of the hour the output contracts to the station idents and news broadcasts, before splitting out to the chaotically beautiful throng once again. Nick Franglen in conversation with Marius Kwint Literary Salon, Saturday, 20th July 2013 2.30-3.30 pm Latitude Festival, Henham Park between the A12 and A145 north of Blythburgh in Suffolk Musician, producer and artist Nick Franglen is a founder member of Lemon Jelly and a Mercury Music Prize and Brit Award nominee. He has produced albums for John Cale and Badly Drawn Boy, and played on studio recordings for Björk, Primal Scream, Hole, Pulp, and Blur. As half of Blacksand, he played gigs on a submarine and in an abandoned government test facility. Other performances in special places include Hymn to London Bridge and Hymn to the Manhattan Bridge, a 24-hour duet for theremin and commuters that made music from the interaction of people and iconic structures. His latest creation, Hive, is perhaps the ultimate in immersive auditory experiences, and is at Latitude's Faraway Forest. This event is supported by the Wellcome Trust and the Space Offsite programme of the Faculty of Cultural and Creative Industries at the University of Portsmouth.
