AboutNicholas Harding's work was brought to our attention last year by leading Australian dealer Rex Irwin who exhibits his paintings and drawings with great success. As an introduction the artist agreed to send us a group of pictures which we will show in the gallery in February and March. Harding was born in Britain, and although he went to Australia as a boy, his style does resonate with the great
post war British landscape painters.
Barry Newis, born in 1939, studied at Bromley College of Art in the late 1950's where he met and was taught by Frank Auerbach. Newis follows in the British tradition of impasto painting, exemplified by artists such as Bomberg, Kossoff and Auerbach. His use of paint however is his own, working three-dimensionally, adding or removing layers of paint to imbue the landscape with a tangible sense of physical structure.
