A contemporary art exhbition by Edinburgh based artist Davy Macdonald of abstract, conceptual and figurative paintings.
About
Until this point of my artistic journey I have focussed predominately on figurative painting together with landscape and still life studies. I now find my art evolving and growing in new directions and recently have become very interested in the history and development of abstract and conceptual art.Abstract
My abstract paintings are executed instinctively and expressively. The colours, tones and mark-making are laid down following an unseen pattern until they become their own unique representation of an infinite number of possible outcomes. A once hidden design is unearthed.
Like viewing an ever-changing sky, my abstract paintings provide a framework for a multitude of adventures of the imagination. Ideas develop quickly like the spurt in growth of a germinating seed. They fight for life, some gather enough form and are defined while others recede. We are influenced by everything that surrounds us - the turmoil and the hope. My aim is to harness the positive energy of the idea onto canvas as a means of connecting to the “collective unconscious”.
Conceptual
For my conceptual paintings I have followed the idea of “deliberate accidents” to help define the design of each painting. Random and seemingly unintentional “chance” markings made while staining or preparing the canvas become the compositional template for the painting - whether they suggest faces, figures, landscapes or other objects. This was a recommended approach encouraged by Da Vinci and was used by cave painters 25,000 years ago as they followed the structure of the rocks they drew on.
Some of the paintings have been painted in a number of orientations so that a different perspective is gained each time they are viewed. One of the main recurring themes is the use of Asian and Eastern influences embedded in the figures, landscapes and objects.
Figurative
My figurative paintings have been created using a variety of compositional devices related to the laws of Nature; the Golden Spiral, rules of thirds etc. Elements of my current abstract and conceptual ideas are also prevalent and help to create a different approach to figurative compositions with some classical representations of particular interest interlaced.
