About
This exhibition presents film, photography, sculpture and vidoe by Beatrice Gibson, Siobhán Hapaska, Jimmy Merris and Roger Palmer who have been short-listed for the inaugural New City Art Prize.
A new film by Beatrice Gibson (b.1978) combines the video game Minecraft with graphic scores and images of the stock exchange in a meditation on the connections between the world of finance and music.
Siobhán Hapaska (b.1963) is a sculptor who brings together highly disparate materials, forms and styles that often suggest strange, ambiguous narratives or allegories.
Jimmy Merris (b.1983) presents a new, satirical video that makes a mockery of the earnest and self-conscious nature of many artists' interviews.
Roger Palmer (b.1946) photographs a variety of perspectives on cities, whether through ruined landscapes or alongside aspirational images.
By bringing together such a diverse range of interests, subjects and media, this exhibition presents a snapshot of contemporary practice across the UK. The 2014 New City Art Prize is funded by MK Community Foundation and aims to connect emerging visual artists in and around Milton Keynes to national developments in contemporary art.
The 2014 New City Art Prize has been awarded to: Siobhán Hapaska
