New Art West Midlands 2017 is the region’s showcase for exciting new work and includes painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, print and installation.

About

The annual exhibition provides a new and vital platform to show the work of emerging artists who have graduated from the region’s five university art schools- Birmingham City University, Coventry University, Staffordshire University, University of Wolverhampton, University of Worcester- and for the first time Hereford College of Arts.

This year’s exhibition is selected by artists Jason E. Bowman and Barbara Walker and the independent curator Angela Kingston. The work in the exhibition references various themes including new materialism, environmental politics, use of saturated colour and neo- surrealism.

mac Birmingham exhibits a number of works that take changes in the natural environment and its ecology as a starting point, the selection and curation of works referencing mac’s site within Cannon Hill Park. For example: Milly Rowland’s brightly coloured mono-prints reveal a subaquatic world of hybrid sea creatures, Jade Hamilton’s sculptures ‘Future Mess’ (2016) consisting of planted glass domes with breathing apparatus critique rising air pollution levels and Damian Massey spray paints discarded clothing and twigs to create large-scale worms and bugs.

Featuring in the exhibition at mac will be: Susan Brisco, Halina Dominska, Megan Evans, Pamela Fletcher, Bruno Grilo, Jade Hamilton, Katie Hodson, Renata Juroszova, Damian Massey, Jenna Naylor, Natalie Ramus, Milly Rowland and Sarah Zacharek.

The New Art West Midlands 2017 exhibitions will also take place at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Worcester City Art Gallery and Museums.
