A solo exhibition of a new of work by Gillian Cooper, exploring migration, the home and belonging, evoked through a collection drawings and prints of imaginary and recollected birds' nests.

About

A collection of beautifully gestural drawings and prints of imaginary or remembered nest forms.  While exploring the physical, beautiful, architectural and metaphysical qualities of real life nests, there lies within the tender or stark, angular hand drawn lines in this catalogue of empty, carefully woven forms, usually places of security and nurturing, a residual, uneasy sense of migration or loss.  Hand drawn, expressive marks, reference that which is human and the human 'nest' - the home, particularly poignant in the context of the relative, recent global human experiences of isolation and vast increase in domestic abuse cases during the pandemic and mass evacuation from the conflict of war in Ukraine.  Shown alongside several series and diptychs of drypoints, monoprints and collographs, Gillian Cooper's drawings, from miniature to large scale, repeatedly sift and revolve round and through the notions of the nest, home and belonging and what they mean to us.

Gillian studied BA and MA Fine Art in Bristol and Cardiff.  She has exhibited installations and 2-dimensional works at gallery and site specific locations throughout the UK, including Arnolfini, Bristol, The Exchange and Newlyn Galleries, the ICA London, a large scale temporary installation for Chiltern Sculpture Trail, Oxford and internationally including HDK Berlin, Produzentengalerie Hanover and the Serbian Sculpture Biennale, Pancevo.

This exhibiton has been supported by Cultivator, Arts Council England, Cornwall Council and the European Regional Development Fund.
