ABOUT THE BOOK
Devise a strategy to get close to something using language.
Weaving themselves into the literary tradition of texts written in response to a prompt, the eleven essays in Near, Variations attempt to reconsider verbal description to be as valid a form of description as visual depiction. Taking this aim to heart, the essays in this collection devise strategies to achieve proximity to their focal point. At once straightforward discussions of their subject matter, spanning art, music, poetry and film, the texts in Near, Variations are also enquiries into their status as essays. Their collective tone slips in and out of the academic register, often rejecting it altogether. Just as a window is both seen through as well as looked out of: as often as writing an essay is about its subject, it is also about its author and as often as it is about its author, reading it becomes about its reader, too.
