About
The works of N. Dash (b. 1980, Miami) arise from an intense and equitable exchange with whatever is to hand. In her multifaceted practice, the artist processes humble materials such as dirt, earth, jute, rope, strips of polystyrene foam, plastic bottles and discarded cardboard into complex compositions. She borrows techniques and materials from painting, sculpture, photography and printing. Through these transformations, a paradox seems to form in the perception of the works, which are as refined as they are uncomplicated.
The vitality and economy of Dash’s constructions can be traced to her connection to the environment, both natural and man-made, and to geological time or the vast interval in which biological life has arisen on earth. The underlying tension between what is industrially ‘given’ and what is manually constructed, and the unpredictability of the elements and human attempts to tame these natural energies, forms an integral part of this tactile oeuvre. New works will be produced especially for the exhibition.
