Art and gardening are both well known for their recuperative benefits in helping people to recover from mental health conditions. Imagine the power of using both in one project.

About

Portsmouth based artist Adrian Mundy is doing just that with his Arts Council England (ACE) funded Grow An Exhibition project, which culminates in 3 exhibitions entitled 'Natural Imperfections' between February and August 2016.

Adrian is well on the way to full recovery after 18 years of agoraphobia that at first left him virtually housebound. He has also had M.E. for over 28 years which physically limits what he can do.

The idea for 'Grow An Exhibition' was sown at the end of 2013. Adrian was house-sitting for a friend and was wondering what the next step in his life was going to be. He wanted to do more gardening but this was not physically possible. A visit to Tuppenny Barn, West Sussex, was the catalyst to the project after seeing their amazing eco-build education centre - the perfect venue for an exhibition. He decided to combine his love of gardening and art in one project!

Adrian is now at the stage of processing the plants to extract the fibre and start working on the finished pieces for the exhibitions. The title of the exhibitions, 'Natural Imperfections', comes partly from the way the plants 'do their own thing' and grow how they want to, especially last year when the corn partly failed to mature due to the bad weather. The title also represents Adrian's need for perfection in his work, something which is impossible when working with plants and handmade paper. So these ‘Imperfections’ will be embraced in the artwork. The project has been continually documented photographically and these will be used in a self published book to be launched at the Tuppenny Barn exhibition.
