About

Tate Modern will present the largest retrospective of Natalia Goncharova ever held in the UK. Many of the works have never been seen outside Russia before.

Born in 1881, Goncharova gained international fame in her own lifetime for her trailblazing experiments in painting and design. Early in her career she established herself as a leader of the Russian avant-garde with a major show in Moscow in 1913. Goncharova then moved to France, where Sergei Diaghilev noted her talents and she was soon designing costumes and backdrops for Ballets Russes performances in cities including Paris, Madrid and London.

Goncharova’s artistic output traces, influences and transcends the art movements of the 20th century. She paraded in the streets of Moscow displaying futurist body art and worked on religious murals, she participated in avant-garde cinema and created stage designs, illustrated socialist newspapers and designed dresses. The exhibition will explore her diverse sources and influences, from Russian folk art and textile designs to the latest trends in modernism and beyond
