The exhibition brings together two artists, painter Sara Lee Roberts and sculptor Victoria Atkinson.

About

SARA LEE ROBERTS | VICTORIA ATKINSON
‘Myth & Memory’

The exhibition brings two artists together both divergent but share a common awareness; and sensitivity in their work that engages the viewer’s direct engagement with their subject and intangible influences that led to its creation.

Sara Lee Roberts trained at Byam Shaw School of Art, Sussex University, Hamilton Kerr Institute, Cambridge and the Royal Drawing School. In January 2020 saw the publication of Sara’s book ‘Painting and Reinterpreting the Masters’. Published by Crowood Press. In 2019 her painting ‘Rembrandt Triptych’ was selected for the ‘Long Live Rembrandt’ exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Her work has moved away from straight observational painting towards working from memory, from drawings and from paintings of other artists. She is now also making purely abstract work and seeks synergy between the figurative and the abstract. Sara teaches at the Royal Drawing School and at the Wallace Collection.

Focusing on posture, Victoria Atkinson androgynous figures are captured at the edge of movement with gentle reminiscent humour present in their body language.
Monoliths and stone circles are evident, a sense of perpetual time and the feeling that something so still can evoke so much power. The figures and faces are composed, timeless, part of a group and yet distant as if they are hiding behind a persona like an actor on stage. Atkinson took her sculpture degree at City and Guilds of London Art School in the late 1980s where the emphasis was on a classical training in life drawing and sculpture.  She has completed several commissioned bronze portraits.
Vicki’s work has been exhibited in London and the British Isles, as well as further overseas.
