A participatory art exhibition and installation in Tower Hamlets to celebrate 50 years of independence for Bangladesh.

Take a step back in time with My Home, My Bari an art installation that represents the living spaces of the British Bangladeshi community in 1971 in Tower Hamlets.

As a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence, acclaimed local artist Rahemur Rahman is working with a group of artists and young people from Tower Hamlets to evoke such a living space. This installation will be a multi-sensory depiction of the textures, décor and aromas of those homes to trigger memories and associations of that era.

Rahman has been commissioned by Tower Hamlets Council with funding from Arts Council England to deliver this innovative project, which builds on his local roots, his British Bengali heritage and his dynamic approach to fashion and textiles, which effectively redefines the concept ‘Made in Bangladesh’.

The installation will be on display in the heart of Banglatown as the culmination of a nine-month period of research and development which makes up the wider participatory project. See the installation at the Kobi Nazrul Centre, off Brick Lane, from 26 November - 14 December

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of salons with panel discussions around a range of themes including how the project came about, the art scene in Bangladesh, and the abstract notions of home and homeland.

Local business owners from the British-Bangladeshi community have also shared their stories as part of the wider project.  The installation allows visitors to discover a sense of place around Brick Lane through a walking tour of participating businesses. Follow the trail of vinyl stickers or QR codes in windows to discover a sense of place, a sense of belonging and a legacy through testimonies which unveil their current lives, livelihoods and traditions.

All events are free and booking is now open at Eventbrite
