In texts and photographs, the artist wants to make the lives of parents with severely mentally handicapped children comprehensible.
About
Motherly love: What does that mean in life with severely mentally handicapped children? How does that work, how do these mothers manage to care for their children for years, to love them, to promote their development? These are the questions that Kleinmachnower photographer Sebastian Schmidt, himself the father of a severely mentally handicapped daughter, explores. Nine mothers - and one father - look back on 14, 18 or 30 years in which the state of emergency is the norm: hospital stays, battles with bureaucracy, rejection by society, families that break up or marriages that fail.
In texts and photographs, the artist wants to make the lives of these parents comprehensible: portraits shimmer through illuminated transparent papers. On them, the viewer learns about the lives of the mothers and fathers in interview excerpts. The portrayed persons become visible as soon as the viewers lift the tracing paper.
Through a sound installation, the children become part of the exhibition
