“It was written in the starlings...”
Murmurations is a photo and video exhibition featuring work by Andy Lawrence. Being held at PZ Gallery, it is, in its simplest form, a celebration of the wonder of the natural world.
About
When starlings flock together in movement and flight, they appear as a bigger mass to ward off predators. They’re said to react to the six birds directly closest to them; those in turn react to their six closest... and on it goes, creating the energy of thousands of wings beating as one.
Murmurations is a study and appreciation of these tiny birds, and their in-part scientifically unexplainable movements. It’s a desire to share and recreate the mesmerising, moving experience, and the mindfulness it inspires.
“On a deeper level, it is an observation of the power of collaboration and communication; so many hearts and minds working together, in fluid synchronisation, for the benefit of all. For the many, not the few,” says Andy. “In an increasingly fractured world where self-interest, self-care and selfies dominate, it is perhaps a poignant reminder of what can be achieved when many come together as one.”
Murmurations will open on the evening of Friday 16th August at PZ Gallery, from 6pm-9pm. The exhibition will then be open daily from 10am-6pm until Sunday 25th August. Viewing appointments outside of this time can be made by emailing andylawrencephotography@gmail.com.
