murmurART: an introduction — First Thursday private view and performance upstairs at 20 Hoxton Square

About

Introducing the new year, the new exhibition space, and exceptional works from twenty-two emerging artists, murmurART presents a First Thursday opening upstairs at 20 Hoxton Square, from 6-9pm with a new performance by Helen Carmel Benigson at 8pm. ‘murmurART: an introduction' brings together works by twenty-two artists who have at some point been supported by murmurART since its inauguration in June 2009. Delighting in its range and diversity, the exhibition crosses a broad spectrum of practices and provenances. The works include new sculptures by Chelsea scholar David A Smith and RCA postgraduate Lucy May, poetic installation by Goldsmiths graduate Adam Thompson, a temporary rust drawing from Middlesborough-based artist Tony Charles, painting from RA graduate and Jerwood prize-winner Nick Fox, photography from the Ruskin's Saatchi New Sensations winner Oliver Beer and Brighton graduate Simon Carruthers. The evening will culminate in the one-off, original performance ‘Sweet and Sticky' by rapper and video artist Helen Carmel Benigson (Princess Belsize Dollar). Energetic, hyper-hysterical, glossy, colourful and sexy, Slade postgraduate Benigson's practice draws from the colours and pace of music television, trauma and the body, roses and rap music, deep intimacy, femininity and food. Video works, limited edition prints and pink monoprints by Benigson will accompany the performance. ‘murmurART: an introduction' marks not only the first exhibition for murmurART in its new 3000sqft exhibition space and offices at 20 Hoxton Square, but also the beginning of a new working relationship with 20 Hoxton Square Projects; both working together to bring an exciting and complimentary programme of exhibitions and events in 2010. The evening is part of Timeout First Thursdays and drink will be provided courtesy of Peroni
