Saudi Arabia has announced its participation in Biennale Arte for the third time at this year’s La Biennale di Venezia. Saudi artist Muhannad Shono will be representing the National Pavilion of Saudi Arabia, working with curator Reem Fadda, and assistant curator Rotana Shaker.

About

Shono is based in Riyadh and is inspired by his childhood memories and his family’s long history of migration which has left an impactful paradox in his work. These events have defined his relationship to space by creating a sense of freedom that crosses cultural constituents allowing him to search through the different concepts, materials, and techniques. Shono’s inimitable style, which is versatile and uninhibited in medium and form, has manifested in works that range from intimate drawings, large- scale sculptural works, and robotic and technological pieces.

Shono said: “I am honoured to represent Saudi Arabia at La Biennale di Venezia, not only as myself but carrying with me the irrepressible creative spirit of Saudi Arabia and to be working with the entire team of the national pavilion.”

Reem Fadda, curator and art historian, noted: “It is a privilege to be working with artist Muhannad Shono, who represents an energetic, progressive, and visionary mindset coming out of Saudi Arabia. His work ethic and ideas are exemplary. And ultimately this will manifest in his ambitious project presented at La Biennale di Venezia, which will surely captivate audiences.”

Assistant Curator Rotana Shaker remarked: “It is incredibly inspiring to be working with Muhannad Shono and Reem Fadda on a world stage, representing a visionary generation of Saudi Arabia’s creative talents.”

The National Pavilion of Saudi Arabia has been commissioned by the Visual Arts Commission (VAC), which is overseen by the Saudi Ministry of Culture. CEO of the Visual Arts Commission, Dina Amin, said: “Saudi Arabia’s National Pavilion at Biennale Arte 2022 will once again shine a light on the remarkable talent of the creative community within the Kingdom. We are delighted to participate in this global cultural dialogue, represented by Muhannad Shono, one of the country’s most exciting artists working today, whose multidisciplinary practice embraces themes central to the world in which we live.”
