These paintings and constructions are the result of a personal journey from dense, texture-rich life studies to the elimination of the personal from the painted surface. The colours used are just that, pigments, with no relevance. All value judgements implied come from the viewer not the artist.
There is a mixture of works on canvas, tubes and sticks, the colour providing the change from trash to artwork.
Each blank canvas is approached with apprehension and curiosity; I don't know and have no expectations of what the outcome will be. Overlays are applied mechanically with rollers; there is no place for gesture, just chance and serendipity. The surface now takes on a life of its own, I am just the facilitator: the ego has ceased to be a factor.
Where to add dots is the only conscious decision made by the artist and they form an experiment in changing the nature of the original colour. The pass of each layer forms a rhythm which flows throughout the life of the work with the perception of colour shifting each time. A huge raggedy blob can be transformed into a delicate floating sphere.
These are silent pieces but they resonate with noise. They are static but they are full of movement. They represent nothing they just are. This is what I do.
