About

Vegas is delighted to present 'Most of them', Geraldine Gliubislavich's third solo show with the gallery.
'Most of them' features a new collection of the darkly figurative works for which Gliubislavich has become known since graduating from Byam Shaw in 2006. Still fascinated by the dissolution of photographic image into paint, Gliubislavich uses the ambiguously abstract crowds that fill her work to further explore her possibilities and limitations within the medium.
Employing range and deftness, Gliubislavich introduces complex compositions with darkened tones to create a subtly restless sense in the subjects. With no definite circumstance forced upon these scenes, they appear to flow surreally from one piece into the next. Muted colours work to mimic the menacing undertones that attach themselves to a large throng, raising connotations of tradition and historic rituals. The potentially violent tension that seems ready to spill is given sensuality by her careful and sometimes delicate application.
Showcased in 'Most of them' we can see a new stage in her work emerge. An introduction of further colour into a still limited palette serves to heighten the frenzy. Still in doubt about their situation in time and place, the subjects of the paintings are being pushed, pulled and investigated. It could be that many others lie in wait underneath, behind and after the crowds and processions that Gliubislavich has long been creating. Through this exploration she sheds light on sections of an indefinite, violent and sensual people, and we, as viewers are allowed to watch this evolutional process play out upon the walls.
Born in 1978 Geraldine Gliubislavich attended the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ESAD), Strasbourg and Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs before completing her postgraduate studies at Central St Martins, Byam Shaw in 2006. In 2009 she won the Jerwood Contempory Painting Prize and her work will be featured in the upcoming publication '100' which features 100 most promising international artists under 35 years. Her International Solo exhibitions include De Nederlandsche Bank, Amsterdam and I M Art, Seoul. Gliubislavich lives and works in Belgium and is currently represented by VEGAS, London.
