A Women in Film event presented by Dr Bernadette Casey

About

Lynne Ramsay's follow-up to the acclaimed Ratcatcher (1999) stars Samantha Morton as a supermarket worker in a cold, wet, Scottish port, who comes home to find her boyfriend has committed suicide. Morvern's response to this cataclysmic event has been described by Ramsay as ‘shocking, really punk rock'. The films haunting, subversive quality combines hedonism with dark humour along with a stupendous sound-track. Morvern Callar (2002) Film running time: 97 Mins Certificate: 15 Language: English Dr Bernadette Casey has taught and written in the areas of media, cultural studies and sociology for many years, and has a particular interest in the contribution of women to cultural life, including the place of women film directors within cinema history. Her talk will outline Lynne Ramsay's approach to filmmaking, focussing particularly on the acclaimed but controversial Morvern Callar. The talk will last approximately 15 minutes; with an informal Q+A session and discussion following the screening. Part of Peninsula Arts' Best of British season and Plymouth Summer Festival
