Morphic by Alistair Burleigh

Up and coming new media artist, Alistair Burleigh, has created a unique 360 degree digital installation for the Main Gallery of The Lightbox in Woking. Alistair's art explores the complex relationships that exist between the high-tech virtual reality of computer systems and the traditional world of real space. Also a talented VJ (video jockey) on the club scene, for the last few years he has been developing an innovative new system of 360 degree immersive audio-visual environment. His eye-catching installation at The Lightbox, 'Morphic', comprises a computer generated digital animation projected onto a sculpture made of polystyrene blocks. It is hung from the ceiling of the building's stunning double-height Main Gallery, designed by Marks Barfield Architects - the team behind The London Eye. The animation is engineered to fit exactly over the blocks, creating a ‘virtual' version of the sculpture itself. For visitors, this creates the illusion of solid, 3D digital forms floating in the centre of the room, constantly moving and changing colour. In this way the digital image has broken free from the confines of the flat screen to become embodied in real space. Based in Bristol, Alistair recently started a media arts company called Wrap3. Past commissions include an invited showing at Tent London in The Truman Brewery complex; an exhibition entitled ‘Distance Learning' at the G39 Gallery in Cardiff; an installation in a show called ON/OFF at The Royal Academy of Art as part of London Fashion Week and an installation at Turnmills nightclub in Farringdon, London. Current projects in progress include a large-scale permanent art installation for a private residence and art gallery in Palma, Mallorca, a temporary promotional retail installation for the Arcadia Group featuring Kate Moss, and an installation to be featured as the centrepiece of a new shopping development in Dubai. 'Morphic' is the centrepiece of The Lightbox's latest family orientated exhibition, Optical Odyssey, which combines science experiments with art to investigate how we see the world around us. It will be on display until 15 June. Tickets for Optical Odyssey (5 April — 15 June) cost £2 and can be purchased from The Lightbox Reception. For more information please visit www.thelightbox.org.uk or call 01483 737837. Opened inS petmber 2007, The Lightbox has recently been nominated for The Art Fund Prize 2008.
