About

11th of August: "PILOTING MYSTICAL MECHANICS"

Our first talk will be given by the artist Coby Rae Crosbie. On the 11th of August Coby Rae Crosbie is going to give a presentation on her research into ideas of knowledge and information, and how it is encompassed in the programs she creates for her own artistic cybernetic practice. The lecture will be followed by a discussion.

Coby Rae Crosbie is a multidisciplinary artist, her practice operates as a response to overstimulation on a global scale by engaging experiences and intimacy in individuality. She works with algorithms that produce computer-generated text and sound, performing computation as a part of the language of ‘poiesis’, exploring the fields from a lens of perception and awareness. Through her practice, Crosbie proposes the use of knowledge as information through social interaction linguistics and heuristics, understanding becoming a tool for observation and comprehension. She is currently part of the Conditions studio program in London, where she is currently based.

17th of August: ‘‘D FOR DEBUGGING AND DATA CLEANSING – MAKING SENSE OF AN AMBIVALENT VOCABULARY’

Our second talk will be given by Johanna Janssen in the form of an experimental assemblage of a digital vocabulary. On 17th August Johanna is planning to present and investigate terms within the English language that operate in both the digital and physical realm while overlapping and diverging from each other in their meaning. The lecture will be followed by a discussion.

Johanna Janssen is a Berlin and Cologne (Germany) based curator with a background in Culture Studies. Her research interests lie in the field of digital art with a current focus on the provocation of a collapsed ‘digital dualism’ and a critical reflection towards its usefulness as a concept. In her curatorial practice, she further explores alternative methods of translating material artworks into the virtual exhibition space (and vice versa), while questioning when and where this endeavor is doomed to be impossible.

19th of August: ‘ASPECTS OF URBAN GROWTH, SOCIAL BEHAVIOURS AND AESTHETIC CHAOS’

The last talk in the series will take the shape of a conversation between photographer Ralph Steinegger and the curator of this show, during which they will discuss aspects of abandonment in urban spaces.

Ralph Steinegger is currently based in South East Asia, where he draws inspiration for his practice through actively observing and recording urban spaces and city infrastructures. Through the photographic documentation and reflection texts attached below, Steinegger explores the aesthetics of urban landscape. In his latest series of works, and it’s accompanying text, he looks at acts of abandonment, vanished owners of contemporary objects as very particular patterns of behavior. Steinegger’s photographs function as ‘evidence of mankind’s enduring lack of respect for communal property and tendency for irrational decision making’.
