A splash in the ocean, climbing a tree, sharing a smile with friends, these simple golden moments of human happiness inspire Jo to paint.
Jo Hodgen qualified from Reading University in Fine Art in 1987 and has been painting ever since. Now based in London many of her paintings are of her children and are intended to be fun.
She starts from photographs, makes a sketch, simplifying and exaggerating facial features and surroundings. She then uses oil paint applied liberally with a palette knife, building up highly textured surfaces.
If a painting doesn't work, she will sometimes start a new one on top. She never knows what the finished picture will look like, only that it will be thick with paint.
Jo will be at the gallery on Tuesday 6th and also Friday 9th August.
