In the second part of Modular Arabic Typeface Workshop participants will build on the modular alphabet created in the first workshop and develop a full typeface with all the contextual variants of each letter.

About

Using the same basic modules they will extend the full alphabet while respecting the rules of relation and proportion between the modules set in Modular Arabic Typeface part 1. The course will start by looking at how to interpret the original modular alphabet digitally followed by sketching out the full character set, continuing to develop the typeface on Glyphs.

Day 1
. Short presentation and discussion about the difference between writing, lettering and type with examples of modular typefaces.
. Explore the different ways to interpret the handmade alphabet digitally

Day 2
. Introduction to Glyphs
. Importing the alphabets into Glyphs
. Sketching the full character set manually

Day 3
. Critique session of sketches
. Digitizing the sketches

Day 4
. Working on modular spacing, texture and evenness of the typeface

Day 5 
. Designing a specimen sheet/poster putting the typeface to use.

Each session will be scheduled as follows:
Part one    09.00 – 13.00 
Lunch        12.00 – 13.00 
Part two    13.00 – 15.00

MATERIALS:

Tashkeel will supply basic materials and all tools required for workshop exercises. Participants must purchase any additional materials used.
