About
Modify
Modify presents artwork by Sandra Zanetti (USA), Benjamin Valentín Román (USA), Jenny Nguyen (USA) and Will Crosby (UK) that explore the effect modifications have on the self and society as a whole. Human actions and reactions are decided by an analytic process the mind encounters in everyday situations. At the root of this process is the primal desire to survive and gain acceptance in society.
In these moments where humans instinctually weigh options and make choices based on societal observation, we believe the choices we make will provide us with safety. But at what point are we sacrificing the self? While our life experiences are individual, we still ride this continuous passage of endless choices, based off of external factors that we interact with on a daily basis. Whether the modifications we make are physical, material, psychological, or technological we modify ourselves to survive in constantly fluctuating interpersonal and societal worlds.
All of the artists in this show are in the first quarter of their lives. Toward the end of our lives, we will assess the complete self in relation to the modified self through the updated definition of the human landscape we have created universally. We will look back on our lives and remember what we decided to hide, what we conformed to, what we spoke up against and how we modified to survive.
