Mindful Photography Workshop: Connecting to your environment through photography, the art of noticing with Amber Banks Brumby

About

A mindful photography session. Make connections with nature and sense of place and feel present through the practice of photography. The day will include a run down on how to make the most of your camera, lumen prints using nature, a mindful walk and a group pop up exhibition focusing on sequencing and narrative.

Age group and abilities to be taught        

  • 18 years and above.
  • Ideal for beginners but suitable for all abilities.

Course aims and skills/knowledge to be taught

  • Mindfulness and feeling present through the practice of photography
  • Further camera knowledge
  • Alternative photography processes without a camera
  • Sequencing and narrative

Course outline for Mindful Photography Workshop

Morning activity

  • Small talk on Amber’s practice and an introduction to how photography is a tool to feel present and to notice the world around you.
  • Participants go out and pick up one element of nature to make lumen prints with – this will be exposed for the majority of the day.
  • Lesson on how to make the most of your camera.
  • Guided walk – participants make photos feeling present in the space, noticing the unnoticed
  • Late lunch – 13:30 – 14:10.

Afternoon activity

  • Introduction to sequencing and narrative.
  • Participants choose 3 photos to print on laser/ink jet printer – curate as a group and discuss outcomes.

Materials and equipment required by participants

  • A camera that you can take off auto (e.g. DSLR)

  • Printer
  • Light sensitive paper

Methods of assessing outcomes

  • Discussion of workshop with Workshop Tutor and fellow workshop students and completion of evaluation form.
