Mimi Youn - Mememimi Selling Photography Exhibition

About

Mememimi is Mimi Youn's first solo UK selling exhibition - an autobiographical series of Polaroids and limited edition prints created by the young artist between 2007 and 2009. Youn was born in 1981, in An-dong, South Korea. She is an artist who obsessively documents her everyday life and experiences with friends around the world through the instant medium of the Polaroid. With similar existential concerns to photographers such as Nan Goldin and Wolfgang Tillmans, it is raw emotion that she seeks to capture. Youn also identifies with the concerns and practices of the Abstract Expressionists. Jackson Pollock's preference of decision over the accidental has influenced Youn's physical manipulation of the Polaroids, yet Cy Twombly's elements of hesitancy and fragility inspire her acceptance of chance during the interrupted development of the medium. With these practices in mind, Youn's emotion is expressed through the intentional distortion of the Polaroid's emulsion, abstracting familiar subjects to express difficult emotions through marks that she cuts from the surface of the Polaroid. Words scrawled across the surfaces attempt to pin down her emotions in an autobiographical context that connects visually and emotionally with the viewer. Youn further distorts the images by enlarging them as archival inkjet prints that engulf us in her fantasy world. The result is an emotive series of visually seductive Polaroids and prints that invite the viewer to explore a young South Korean woman's curiosity and emotional response to her exploration of the Western world. Mimi Youn graduated from The Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, with a MFA in Fine Art in 2008. She was awarded the Lens Culture/Rhubarb Photo Book Award for Mememimi in 2008, and in 2009 was awarded an Artist Residency Programme, at Cite International des arts, Paris. Zoe Bingham Fine Art represents Mimi Youn exclusively in the UK.
