About
A Bulgrannick a Wallfish. A Mollusc Moment considers how we have regarded the humble snail with a mixture of puzzlement and admiration. Lugging its heavy burden of a home, this to the medieval mind suggested qualities of thrift and modesty. It also seems to make the snail a slow animal, indeed a byword for leisurely travel. Our unusual regard for snails, certainly in Europe is suggested by their numerous folk names: box-snail, bull-cog, bulgranick, buljinks, hornywink, oddie-doddie, snarl-gug and wallfish, to name a few. This in itself also shows an element of intrigue and curiosity, compassion and worthiness of close attention.
millimetre is an exhibition space contained within a single picture frame. Devised by artists Finlay Taylor and Kate Scrivener this space for group exhibitions forces invited curators to consider and exploit scale, intimacy and the close juxtaposition of artworks.
