Micro-Residency and Salt Printing Workshop Weekend

Roots Gallery's current exhibition, ‘Notes from Sierra Leone' has transformed the gallery into an experimental studio space, and invites the audience to contribute to the development of an ongoing project by photographer Julia Frost and artist Sian Conway, who are exploring the role of artists in the process of social recovery through an ongoing body of work about their time as artists in residence in Sierra Leone in 2011. Their work explores the traditional Creole culture, the role of artists in social recovery and community development, and through a combination of artistic practice and teaching, they generated a body of work in Sierra Leone, which they are now hoping to expand into a larger project, allowing for audience contribution, reflection and continued development. On Saturday 1st September both artists will be working in the gallery from 11am — 5pm as part of a micro residency. They will use this time to undertake further planning and development of the project and creative work, and hope that members of the public will use this opportunity to engage with the artists and continue the growing dialogue around the project, including the collection of traditional stories, which is a particularly popular aspect of the work. Following this, on Sunday 2nd September photographer Julia Frost will be hosting a salt printing photography demonstration, with the opportunity for audience participation. This event will offer audiences a unique insight into some of the printing techniques used in the work on display in the exhibition, and will also offer the opportunity to interact and creatively engage with the artists and their work.
