A presentation about the collective's work

About

TRANSITION is a London based artists collective currently comprised of Magda Fabianczyk and Mathilda Fowler. Their work, often taking the form of video installations, photography, performance and sculpture, is produced in response to events and encounters devised to bring culturally distinct groups together for a shared experience and exchange. Initiating these events TRANSITION provides an open-ended framework, enabling cooperative artistic practise in an effort to mutually discover new creative possibilities.

Fabianczyk and Fowler are opening a week of development of a new, Folkestone influenced, inspired and made piece with an introduction to their earlier work.

The presentation will include screening of the collective's film 'Premise'.

The film begins with a song and dance performed by women from both India and the UK. The song expresses anxiety about the affects of deforestation, describing a community of artists united in the face of adversity.

The screenplay was written by the Patachitra artists in response to the theme 'Transformation' and shot on location in Calcutta, West Bengal. Often comic, the resulting film draws from folk theatre, Bengali Cinema and Bollywood, sometimes resembling a musical soap opera. Folklore, social commentary, song and dance are woven together over twelve short scenes inspired by the theme, encompassing the Patuas concerns about pollution and the environment, the economic challenges faced by the artists in their working lives, and a retrospective re-imagining of the preparations they made in anticipation of the collaboration between the two groups.
