It is an attempt to map people’s comments, reactions and experiences within the current state of a city that is in demographic flux and is dynamically shifting within the social, economic and cultural margins of an ongoing crisis.
The space on the third floor of the Diplarios School starts empty and NEON invites you to actively participate in the production of Michael Landy’s installation, by sending images that mirror your daily interaction, emotions and struggle with the city: imagery and experiences that characterize it.
Images that capture contemporary Athens and its social and political landscape, images that imprint the social condition, images as headlines of the news, images as events of everyday life, texts, symbols and logos, aphorisms and slogans on the streets, become encoded and translated into an abstract visual language that the artist has developed in his recent work: images through the eyes of the inhabitants and visitors of the city attempt to create a map of a common and often unseen daily environment. The final work will take the form of blue and white drawings on paper pinned directly to the wall of the School.
The images can be submitted in digital format via the website of NEON (neon.org.gr/en/breakingnewsathens) or as hard copy in the exhibition space, on Fridays from 12pm to 7pm.
Ιmages will be processed by the artist and his team and those that are transformed into drawings will be gradually posted in the rooms of the Diplarios School, realizing the exhibition as an in situ installation in progress. The exhibition space opens to the public on 30 March 2017 and the installation will be complete on June 11th 2017. For four months the communication between public and artist will remain open as the internal space at the Diplarios School gradually transforms into a canvas of a communal and collaborative experience that evolves together with Athens. A city in a continuous emergence.
