About

The show opening on the 22nd of November at 5th Base Gallery will feature two series of newly painted works selected and curated for this show by Michael Bolton. The first of these paintings are titled the Black works and feature a series of four oil paintings utilising dark grounds for abstracted pieces. The second series within this show are titled the Purple works and serve to contrast with the darker counterpart of the Black works.

The Black works embody Michael Bolton’s improvised methods of the application of oil paint, the works feature dark and bold grounds with contrasting vibrant shapes. Regular motifs of the mixed colours of Prussian Blue and Titanium White along with Naples Yellow and Lamp Black resonate within this series. With a newly found dynamism from the bold brightness of Cadmium Red within two of the works. The thick paint has been scraped onto the canvas using credit cards and palette knives which has become synonymous with Michael Bolton’s paintings and create a tension with the flatness of the ground but also serve to create a sense of assonance within the thick application.

The Purple Works are a new direction for Michael Bolton in that it features an attack on his regular motifs and self-criticisms within his work. The Purple Works feature a break away from the rectangular sections of the previous series in an attempt to combat the association of skylines and buildings within the abstraction. Further curves of paint and brush applied paint, unusual within Michael Bolton’s work, create a new sense of tenseness and unrest within the gesturally applied marks. The paint is often flung onto the canvas to further enhance the improvisation of the work as some of the application of paint is left up to chance.

Michael Bolton was born in Gillingham and after completing a Foundation course at the University of The Creative Arts moved to East London where he is currently living and working. He is nearing completion of his BA Fine Art degree at the University Of East London. Exhibition 01 marks the first solo show of his artistic career.
