Canadian abstract painter Michael Adamson makes a highly anticipated return to Thompson's, unveiling a stunning new body of work for our Harpenden gallery.
About
Adamson is the product of a trifecta of creative institutions- Ryerson University, Toronto (1991) Vancouver's Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design (1993-97), & Universität Kunsthochschule Kassel (1996). Combining his formal training with an early career in video and photography, Adamson emerged with a unique and undeniably enticing painting style. At the centre of his works is the convergence of personal expression and nods to cultural history. Adamson uses his paintings as a kind of shorthand, encompassing a range of the artists responses to observations, ideas and emotions.
Big, bold, canvases are inspired by the Abstract Expressionist works of Hans Hofmann whilst paying homage to the Group of Seven's Tom Thomson, famed for his depiction of the Canadian wilderness. Bright oils arranged in gridded patterns play tribute to a North American landscape parcelled into grids, like great checkerboards across the top half of a continent.
