Marissa Mardon's third solo show 'Method' features a collection of new paintings along side a retrospective look at how her work has developed over the last 10 years.
About
In a departure from her recognisable photorealistic oil paintings, Marissa has challenged herself to explore the use of colour and varying forms abstraction with the intention of finding a looser way of painting. The new work will range from portraits of local musicians and friends, abstracted figures from 1930's scottish holiday snaps to dockyard architecture and local scenes. 'Method' will also be the first time Marissa has ever exhibited acrylic paintings (rather than oil) and will evidence her personal struggles and triumphs of working with a different medium. This show represents a personal journey, a self indulgent search for something new and an opportunity to discover and learn. Some works might be more successful than others, but each will play a developing role and be an important part of the creative process.
'Through teaching others, I have begun to realise the importance of 'play' in the creative process. In producing paintings, people can feel a pressure to conform to particular expectations, that they should produce a piece of artwork which demonstrates specific skills, subject matter, or what they think other people would like to see. I feel this can stifle creativity however, so with an effort to push all those pressures to the back of my mind, 'Method' is my chance to play.'
