This summer an exhibition of paintings by Merlin James brings together works from the start of James' career in the early 1980s with his current paintings. The exhibition reveals James's extended exploration of the process and meaning of painting. Wide ranging in character, his paintings include images of our environment ' rooms, buildings, distant landscapes, sea and sky ' or of figures and objects. This is the first major solo exhibition of James's work in a London institution.
