The Tunnel is a group of artists, poets and theorists based in London and Manchester. They exhibit there work in a wide variety of spaces such as disused shops and Churchs.
About
The exhibition is based on the ideas of consciousness and empathy in relation to technology. The title Mercerism is derived from Philip K. Dicks novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep(1968). Mercerism is the technology based religion of the future that creates a collective consciousness thta leads to an empathy between humans.; in a sense an almost spiritualised unity of joy and pain; both sensations have equal worth in the Nietzschean world view.
Other philosophical concepts explored in the book and film are what defines a human being; in the novel empathy is the key(Deckard) in the film adaptation(Blade Runner 1982) memory is the most vital ingredient(Tyrell).
The work in the exhibition relates to both the film and text.
