Audio installation within the disused telephone box in Plymouth’s historic Royal William Yard.
About
Audio installation within the disused telephone box outside the Factory Cooperage Building, in Plymouth’s historic Royal William Yard.
Collected distaff memories from The Gendered Archive explore the concept of ‘women as keepers of history and custodians of the past’ and will be relayed as an individual listening experience. The archive examines personal historical artefacts, matrilineal transferences and the female narratives they embody. Objects, skills, traditions and memories are all transferred through the maternal side, and the work attempts to reveal the previously hidden archives into temporal and affirming representations, in an attempt to re-imagine the past and re-inform the present.
The nostalgic red telephone box holds memories to everyone who remembers queuing to make a call, Button A, Button B and the ‘pips’ that sounded when more money was required to continue the call. The installation will bring back memories of personal conversations in a public space, whilst listening to female recollections of times past.
