The Painting Center considers new members on a regular basis. The gallery is governed by its artist members and is overseen by an advisory board of alumni and supporters. The membership is responsible for organizing the schedule of exhibitions, maintaining financial stability, selecting new members and carrying out the mission of The Painting Center. There are 15 – 22 members of The Painting Center at one time. As members leave new or returning members are admitted by a majority vote based on viewings of the artists’ work.
There is a membership fee for members, which reflects what each original member put in to build the gallery in 1993. A new member can expect to have a two-person show in the Main Gallery within 24 months of the initiation of membership. He or she can expect to have a one-person show in the Main Gallery within 24 months following the two-person show. Subsequently, a member may continue to participate in two or more person shows in the Main Gallery or show in the Project Room approximately every two years, schedule permitting.
Some of the benefits of membership include: no commission to the gallery on the sale of artworks, representation by an art gallery in Chelsea, New York, participation in art fairs, the ability to sell your artworks on Artsy, a web presence on the membership page, opportunity to curate exhibitions, supportive community of artist members who visit each other’s studios and exhibitions, knowledge of managing an artist-run gallery.
