An Unnatural Journey - talk & discussion
Mandy Barker will describe her journey as a photographic artist that combines science with the issue of marine plastic pollution, alongside her stunning photographic work. Unnatural in terms of the man-made material of plastic which has found its way into the marine environment, but also in the journey of a photographer, who ten years ago witnessed the increasing amount of plastic debris washing up on shorelines, and who has since gone on to achieve global attention by raising awareness of this current critical issue.
Barker will illustrate how and why she presents the recovered objects, along with her intention to engage by way of a combination of text and aesthetics. The achievements in relation to this work show the power of photography to communicate, educate and inform, but above all to show how in some way it has helped lead the way to alter human behaviour and ultimately empower change. (45 minute presentation with questions, followed by an informal discussion alongside examples of books, prints and experiments not previously shown).
