Artist and social provocateur, Tyler Moorehead, has created a playful and uplifting experience and installation inspired by the ritual serving of Japanese tea.
Meet me at the upside down table invites members of the public to be ‘guests’ for a cup of tea with a difference: The installation brings artist and guest together to navigate a bespoke game table that gently guides their private discussion. It's a dynamic meeting combining the restorative properties of a tea ceremony, with the spirited exchange of board game play.
Drawing on the Japanese philosophy of tea as an intimate community encounter, the experience uses meditation and sensory stimulation to create a safe space where visitors may find new meaning in their own life stories.
Each sitting generates one piece of the growing companion installation on display, with pieces worked from vintage teapot covers to privately memorialise each meeting.
Tyler Moorehead is an artist and commentator interested in human fragility, community cohesion and mental wellbeing. Tyler is the current Illuminate Productions Artist-in-Residence at Platform Southwark, an artist's space and gallery in the heart of SE1.
