ONE BAR, TWO GUESTS, ENDLESS INSPIRATION

About

Lighthouse presents Progress Bar, a monthly night that offers insight into the creative practice of contemporary culture's most exciting names. From vanguard filmmakers and musicians to trending artists and activists, Progress Bar is an ear-to-the-ground evening of new art, new music and, hopefully, new friends.

For the third edition of Progress Bar, we’ll be joined by artist and filmmaker Joseph Popper (whose installation The Same Face is co-commissioned by HOUSE 2015 festival and Lighthouse, and is being exhibited throughout May as part ofHOUSE 2015 festival) and by writer, lecturer and all-round philosophy expert, Dr Nina Power.

The evening will be hosted by Lighthouse artistic director Juha van ’t Zelfde, who will be in conversation with the guests. Each Progress Bar presents an up-and-coming DJ/producer from Brighton for musical support. This month is the turn of self-proclaimed “wonky R&B” artist, Meljoanne.

THE GUESTS

Dr Nina Power
Dr Nina Power is currently a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Roehampton University (with The History of European Philosophy; Atomism; Marxism; Samuel Beckett; Equality; Universality and the Generic stated as just a few of her research interests).

As an author, she has published One-Dimensional Woman, which asks the central question: “Where have all the interesting women gone?” and discusses pornography, the feminisation of labour, and even Sarah Palin, or how not to be a feminist.

She writes for numerous publications, including the GuardianNew StatesmanNew Humanist, and Radical Philosophy, and is the reviews editor for The Philosopher’s Magazine.

And in her spare time…she is a keen photographer (with her photos being published in culture magazines, frieze and Icon) and co-runs the film club, Kino Fist!

Joseph Popper
Joseph Popper takes inspiration from the world of special effects to transform found locations and everyday objects into cinematic experiences that examine space travel and other forms of human exploration through film, design, and architecture. His installation for House 2015, The Same Face, will be a recreation of a drone command centre, reimagining the 1983 IRAbombing of the Grand Hotel in Brighton as if viewed from a drone, reflecting on the new reality of terrorism at home.
