The human psyche and the question of identity are a focal point in Maureen Bachaus' oeuvre. She collects thoughts of people from different culture and origin and translates them into photographic assemblages, video- and performance projects, installations and sculptures. The assembled elements (ropes, drawings, objects or lines of texts) suggest a part of the underlying story and are in fact fragments of the people’s thoughts revealing the essence of the mind at the time. A frequently used material is rope, sometimes pierced rawly through the image. This rope, sometimes in a knot, sometimes with hanging parts, symbolizes the limitation or even captivity but also the freedom experienced by certain thoughts and feelings.

ARTIST'S CHOICE
Maureen Bachaus presents
Benoît PIRET (Belgien)
Bilal BAHIR (Irak / Belgien)
Jeton MUJA (Kosovo/NL)
After brainstorming about the exhibition "Rhythm of forgotten Joy", my galerist Nicole Bardohl proposed me to curate a groupshow in the gallery’s backroom during my soloshow. I chose three guest artists: Bilal Bahir (Iraq/Belgium), Jeton Muja (Kosovo / NL) and Benoît Piret (Belgium), who all have their own unique and personal art style, while their personal vision on life has common ground: without exception these artists are world citizens, looking beyond the borders of their own culture. They have chosen their nationality and home country as a starting point to explore the world with all its possibilities and beauty without closing their eyes for its darker side. The way they express themselves is aesthetically and poetic, while the essential message can be found in a deeper layer. As a human being and as a curator, I hope that we can someday transcend the idea of nationality being a reference point for good and bad, legitimacy and acceptability. Because above all, it can be an endless source of magic and inspiration. I wish you a beautiful journey.
