About

The essence painting, the substance of materiality and the plasticity of the form are at the heart of this body of work, in which Famelis challenges their limits.

Famelis focuses on the notion of process, detracting the aesthetic quest. A personal approach on two and three dimensions, which through simple gestural statements, highlights the actions for the creation of a painting, with the process that begins for Famelis from the preparation of the material he uses in his studio; the oils.

Composition and decomposition, destruction of material and recycling of matter from the remnant of the process of an artwork to the creation of a new one. The sculpture’s materiality which derives from the painting process and in this way condenses its essence.

Fameli's work encapsulates different notions of time; the thick layers of oil work that have to be handled at a fast speed, while requiring patience for the oil to dry from one layer to the next.

The boundaries between painting and sculpture disappear as the works appear to fall into one or the other category solely depending on whether they are free in space or whether the material is applied to wooden surfaces. The endless layers of oil, with the heavy weight they carry, seem as if they carry the historical quests of painting over time.
