MATT WESTBROOK / perpetual stew

About

Inspired by his Grandad's seemingly never ending, slow cooked stew, Westbrook will present film and sculpture that explores how ideas and materials can be reused to form the basis of new work. Using the stew as a metaphor, and with an emphasis on thrift, Westbrook has made new functional objects from the piece of work most synonymous with him Composition in Red White and Blue (large deckchair) 2000. Two films create a narrative for the show, documenting the process of reinvention whilst referring to a wider discussion on how art is perceived and how skills and knowledge are passed on through generations. Westbrook has created a small publication to accompany the exhibition, which will include working drawings, personal insights and imagery from the Westbrook family archive. At the opening he will be serving his own variation of his Grandad's lamb stew and you are invited to chat with him about fatherhood, how to build things and the work of Bruce Nauman.
