What secrets do film and dance have to tell each other?

About

The Superimposition (Scenes 1-3) explores the possibility of the cinematic and choreographic as containers for embodied action and subjectivity above and beyond linear time—that can be filled and emptied, that can mediate and transform. It is the first in a series of process-based experiments by choreographer Martin Hansen and moving image artist Melanie Jame Wolf.

Three examples of unexpected 'everyday dance scenes' that occur in narrative art house cinema have fueled the research that has resulted in the video installation and two episodes of live performances presented at Bärenzwinger. These are Jean-Luc Godard's Bande a Part (1964) and two Hal Hartley films that refer to Godard: Surviving Desire (1991) and Simple Men (1992).

The artists have been friends for 10 years and this is their first work together. As choreographers and filmmakers, they are interested in what happens when two formal systems collide. However, this is not only an experiment in form, but also an experiment in cooperation, relationship and the adoption of chaotic coalition politics through the sharing of knowledge and skills.
