This work by the Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed is intended to capture half the air in a given space, so it varies in size and shape each time it is exhibited according to the dimensions of the place in which it is shown.

About

The volume of the space is calculated in cubic metres and divided in half. This number is then divided by the volume of air in a balloon and thus the number of balloons is determined. The space the balloons occupy is full of air as normal, the only difference is that half of that air is inside balloons. As the exhibition goes on some balloons escape and some burst. Extra balloons may be added over time or else the balloons may be left to deflate naturally. Well known for his straightforward approach to making art and his deft economy of means, Creed has produced sculptures, installations, drawings, films, performances, music and text, each of which has found its inspiration in the objects and activities of everyday life. Creed uses the simplest materials to create a world in which reality appears transformed by conceptual rules, as well as by the unexpected breaking of those rules. His work for the Turner Prize in 2001 consisted of an empty gallery filled by light, when a light bulb was turned on, and emptied of it when it was turned off. Gallery opening times: Wednesday to Saturday, 10am - 5pm Sunday, 11am - 3pm * During the school holidays we will be open 10am - 5pm, Monday to Saturday, 11am - 3pm on Sunday.
