The Mark of the Hand – Aubrey Williams Dir: Imruh Bakari, 1986, 52mins, UK Kuumba Productions/Arts Council
Aubrey Williams was born in Guyana, on the Caribbean coast of South America in 1926. In 1952 Aubrey came to England to study agricultural engineering. He soon abandoned his studies to devote his time fully to painting. He attended St. Martins School of Art and became associated with the New Vision Centre. His first exhibition was at the Archer Gallery in 1954. Despite his involvement with European avant-garde art, he is remained a distinctly Caribbean artist, drawing on the myths of pre-Columbian culture and the landscape of Guyana for subject matter and inspiration. The film follows Aubrey to Guyana’s capital city Georgetown, where he is to restore one of his murals, at Timehri International Airport. But this visit is special as Aubrey is to travel on to Hosororo in the far north-west of the country, returning to the source of his inspiration for the first time in forty years.
